DA Surge: Inflation’s New Best Friend?
Dearness Allowance (DA) is at the forefront of preventing price hikes from affecting the daily lives of the common people. The Government gave a go-ahead for a 2% DA increase in March effective from the beginning of the year making it a good start for the year 2025. This increase had the rates going from 53% to 55% of basic pay and adding around ₹4,000-₹5,000 per month to the salaries of the middle level staff. The DR rate of 58% translates to an increase of around ₹14,500 per year in an approximately ₹25,000 monthly pension. However, the biggest and most suo-motu triumph—the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) which was launched on April 1, 2025. It introduces 50% of the last drawn salary as the pension after 25 years of service which means that one will not be uncertain about his/her future. For instance, a retired employee with ₹85,000 last pay could secure ₹42,500 monthly—no taxes, no worries. The ceilings for Gratuity for the BSNL and MTNL staff were also raised to ₹25 lakh which made the retired people feel a little easier for their post-retirement lives. Tamil Nadu revised the HRA under 7th CPC, grading cities according to population for the different slabs: 30% for metros, down to 10% for rural areas. Uttar Pradesh is planning to give the festival bonuses along the parity of DA. Introduced in 2016 with an overall increase of 23.55%, it set the lowest and highest salaries at ₹18,000 and ₹2.5 lakh respectively. However, the last one of 2025—the 58% DA—feels bittersweet. Here comes the 8th Pay Commission that has been approved in January and is looking forward to launching in January 2026. There are rumors going around of a 30-40% salary increase, which could also result in the doubling of the minimum pension to ₹20,500.
