The House Rent Allowance (HRA) lightens up the government employees’ burden in cities and varies according to which city class the employee is assigned to. Based on the7th CPC, the rates are 27% for A-class cities (X), 18% for B-class (Y), and 9% for C-class (Z) cities. The state government of Tamil Nadu made changes and announced new rates in 2025 for employees across all grades I(A) to III. A government employee with a basic salary of Rs 50,000 and living in Delhi can get HRA of Rs 13,500 which is really helpful in combating rent spikes. No significant changes have been made nationwide, but there are rumors about aligning the 8th CPC with Hokey heights which will eventually lead to upward tweaks. Old workers are the real winners—the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) will be effective from April 1, 2025. It guarantees that in case the pensioner has served for more than 25 years he/she will get 50% of the last-drawn pay, the maximum being Rs 85,000 for basic pay. The capping of gratuity has also been raised to Rs 25 lakh for BSNL/MTNL voluntary retirement adopters. The minimum monthly pension continues to remain at Rs 9,000 but it is expected to be very high with the 8th CPC. For some states, the payment of arrears in five installments over the period of June to October 2025 is going to be the case.
